Montemor-o-Velho Castle, Portugal

Just a car ride of 20 min from Figueira our hosts take us to Montemor-o-Velho Castle which history goes further back than the first documented big Arabic invasion in year 711 when the Iberian Peninsula stood under attack.

Montemor-o-Velho has been in dear possession of many victorious men&women due to it being an important inland harbor.

All is not left for us to see, but what is here is worn&wonderful ruins and a church, some towers and high walls that tell the story of what has happened here through the years.

Inbeded in gorgeous greens and with spring flowers all over this sunny day here at the Castle is the perfect picnic or just an afternoon sightseeing.

The stone work and the garden together creates an inviting open space.

The church owns simple beauty
with its spiraled columns.

A grave inside the church
dating to 1612

Some of the walls are left they way they have been ruined (!) and others a renovated. The combo of the two combined with a modern house inside that acts as information center and can also be rented for weddings and parties. This certainly is not a bad place to get wed in!

A lovey time of year to visit is
spring time in March/April

To take of the sweater and just
walk around is so nice.

Inside the church I see the original arch to the right creating a seat for two in the wall that I love.

The second one was intended to have the same type of stone arch but a simpler and younger cement technique was used. The keystone in the middle made for two is the reminder that indicates the first use of building technique.

Love built in seats and sofas into high walls in private houses. Especially good for North and South America where you seem to build the wall surrounding the house prior to the home itself.

If you like so many love Harry Potter you might know the place we are going to next which is Coimbra where JK Rowling has lived and where some of the films were recorded.

Stay in touch
